Known as the "City of Fountains", Kansas City is believed to have more fountains than anywhere in the world, except Rome. With more boulevard miles than Paris, the attractive metropolitan area, straddling the Missouri-Kansas line, has a rich history as a frontier river port where wagon trains were outfitted before heading west on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. Through the years it has been home to a number of legendary musicians including Charlie "Bird" Parker and his Kansas City-style "bebop". The museums at "18th and Vine" pay tribute to musical endeavor and the famous Negro League Baseball teams. A giant churning paddle-wheel from the steamboat Arabia, which was sunk in 1856 and excavated in 1988, fronts this unusual museum. From beaver-skin hats to pistols to medicines, the museum claims the world's largest collection of frontier supplies and is one of Kansas City's premier tourist attractions. 90 minute guided tours are available for the fact hungry visitor.
